Mel’s 20 Thrift Store Tips & Tricks
By now, I'm sure you're all aware of my deep love for thrifting. Over the years, it has developed into a true passion of mine. While it wasn't something that initially caught my attention, once I dove into it during college, I've never looked back. I relish the thrill of the hunt, the satisfaction of scoring an amazing deal, and the joy of curating a stylish, one-of-a-kind, and budget-friendly wardrobe. Additionally, thrifting is a more eco-friendly option than constantly purchasing brand new clothes. Though I do make a conscious effort to shop sustainably, I'm not opposed to buying fast fashion items on occasion.
We’re currently on vacation in Maui and I’ve been getting lots of questions on my outfit. I’ve realized the majority of my outfits are thrifted and since I can’t link to a specific item, I decided to compile a list of 20 tips and tricks that have worked well for me throughout the years. While I understand that thrifting isn't for everyone, and some may feel that the time and effort involved may not be worth it, I completely respect those viewpoints. Furthermore, I recognize that having the resources and time to source outfits is a privilege, and I understand that every body shape is unique, making the thrifting experience more accessible to some than others.
Be open minded: Be open to trying on a variety of sizes and styles. You never know what hidden treasures you may find. This includes thinking outside of the box. You may end up discovering something you never knew you wanted, and you may be surprised at how much you enjoy it.
Be patient: Thrift store shopping can take time, so enjoy the treasure hunt and be patient. Don't expect to find everything you're looking for in one trip. It takes time to build a collection of items, sometimes over several years. Sometimes you might find nothing.
Go often: Thrift stores often have a high turnover of inventory, so it's important to visit frequently to find the best deals and new items. Find your local thrift store and make it part of your errand rhythm. Also, when on road-trips I love to stop at thrift stores on the way. A great to stretch legs, use the bathroom, and give your kid a chance to play with some toys and potentially find something for car entertainment.
Make a list: Before heading to the thrift store, make a list of specific items you're looking for. This will help you stay focused and avoid purchasing items you don't need.
Dress comfortably: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that are easy to take on and off when trying on clothes.
Look for sales: Check if there are any sales or promotions going on. Some thrift stores have certain days where certain items are discounted. Many holidays thrift stores offer sales, so make sure to check their website or social media pages for any current promotions.
Follow thrift stores on social media: Many thrift stores post their newest arrivals, sales, and deals on their social media channels. Follow them to keep up to date on what’s available.
Look for quality fabrics: Check the label for high-quality fabrics like wool, linen, cotton, silk, and cashmere. These pieces are typically more durable and will last longer.
Know your brands: Familiarize yourself with popular brands to help you identify high-quality pieces at a great price.
Inspect items carefully: Before purchasing, inspect the item for any damage or stains. Thoroughly examine the items you are interested in to make sure they are in good condition.
Don't forget about accessories: Thrift stores are a great place to find unique accessories like jewelry, scarves, and belts that can make a statement and uplift your outfit.
Don’t skip the home items: Thrifting linens and kitchen items can be great too. Check for any stains and always wash the item as soon as you get home with hot water, soap, and vinegar. Dry items on high heat.
Shop off-season: Consider shopping for items that are out of season. Shopping for items off-season can lead to better deals and more options.
Look at end caps for hidden treasures: End caps are the shelves at the end of each aisle in a thrift store. These areas can contain hidden gems.
Look for clues for recent restock: Sometimes thrift stores have just restocked the shelves and you may find newly arrived gems, so look for signs of restocking like cartons or new labels.
Look below and beyond your size: Don't just shop in your size section. Sometimes oversized items can be transformed into something more fashionable or you can try tailoring to fit you.
Check the men's and kids' sections: Don't limit yourself to just the women's section. The men's and kids' sections can have hidden treasures that you might not find in the women's section.
Check for unique items: Thrifting is a great way to find unique and one-of-a-kind items. Be open to discovering items that are out of the ordinary.
Have fun and experiment: Thrifting is a fun way to experiment with new styles and trends, so don't be afraid to try new things and have fun!
Go with a friend: Shopping with friends can be enjoyable and you can help each other find items you're looking for. I also, like to share my needs list with friends to help each other out.
In conclusion, thrift store shopping can be a fun and rewarding experience. With a little patience, an open mind, and a willingness to explore, you can find unique and high-quality items at a fraction of the cost of buying new. By following these tips and tricks, you can make the most out of your thrift store shopping trips and discover hidden gems that will elevate your wardrobe and home decor. So next time you're looking to update your style or decorate your home, consider heading to your local thrift store and see what treasures you can find. Happy shopping!
