New Years Resolution: Ideas to Help Nature
I can’t believe we are about to embark on 2019. Where has the time gone?
My resolution for 2019 is to help protect our planet. I love nature and I don’t want it to suffer because of us humans. Resolutions always sound like they need to be big and monumental, but in reality, it’s easier to stick to a small resolution. Even better you can start small and build upon it throughout the year.
These changes below are simple, they aren’t that life changing, but they will yield important results and help save our planet!
REUSABLE BAGS
Use em, use em, use em. Put them in your purse, car, friends car. It takes one plastic bag 5 to 10 years to decompose, a paper bag takes about a month. Protip, recycling your paper bags is better than letting it decompost.
GLASS OR STAINLESS STEEL STRAWS
You’ve probably heard plastic straws are killing the turtles. Not only are they killing innocent bystanders, but they’re polluting the earth and ruining our beautiful beaches and ecosystems. If you don’t want to do it for the turtles, do it so your so your Instagram photos in Tulum won’t be ruined by littered beaches.
RECYCLE
Just do it. Glass, paper, plastic. Help reduce pollution caused by rotting waste.
COMPOST
Not only does this save on landfill waste, but it’s great for your garden. If you live in a condo or apartment, check with your local waste management to see if they can offer this service.
JUST AVOID PLASTIC & ONE USE GOODS
Not only is plastic a chemical, but it’s accumulating like a school of herring feeding on a phytoplankton buffet. Do your best to avoid it.
TRY TO REPURPOSE GOODS OR DONATE
Refresh, reuse, renew! I love a good trip to Value Village. Check your local thrift store before heading to a big box store. Sometimes it’s surprising what you can find and did I mention it’s much cheaper?
LINE DRY CLOTHES
You guys, I didn’t know I was already being so eco-friendly! I don’t like drying the majority of my clothes, rather I like to hang them around the house to dry. So just FYI if you come over, you’ll commonly find clothes hanging over every dinning room chair and curtain rod. I like to air dry because one, most of my clothes are made of natural fibers and they like to shrink. Second I feel like they wear out more when they have been subjected to continuous substantial heat.
So in conclusion, I urge you to take one or some of these changes as your New Years Resolution for 2019. Even the smallest changes will help out our little planet, because Earth is all we got at the moment.
I’ll leave you with one last photo from Mount Rainier National Park, let’s keep this planet beautiful!
