Tips From A Spring Trip to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, France
This town is probably the most beautiful town I've ever explored in my entire life. This darling town was built on platforms situated over 600 feet high on the side of a rock mountain.
If your looking for mini guide for a night or two exploring this town and area, here it is below.
Where to stay:
La Bastide de Moustiers
From the moment we drove up the road to the hotel, we felt at home. Hotel reception was exploding with wisteria.
We reserved the Chamber Superierue room, which was nice and bright with a great view of the terrace.
The resident donkey.
Morning swing before heading out to town for the day.
Where to eat:
La Bastide de Moustiers
Breakfast was delicious and the dining room was charming. I kept trying to figure out how I could one, sneak the dining chairs out of the hotel, and two, transport them over 5,000 miles to my dining room table. In the end I decided it would be too much work and morally wrong.
Restaurant Les Tables Du Cloitre
The local miel (honey) beer was amazing. We had the special of the day, which was an olive tartine.
Don’t Miss
The Gorge du Verdon
This is the Grand Canyon of France. Great place to hike, bike, and swim.
We stopped on the side of the road and was welcomed by this guy with his flock.
Hiking to Church
Before dinner we decided to hike up to the church. A must do!
Night Time Views Of Town
After dinner, and on our way back to the hotel, we stopped to get a view of the city at night time. It was amazing, and this picture does it zero justice.
Shopping in Town
Lots of fun shopping.
Lavender Farms
On the way into town we drove past miles and miles of lavender and yellow in bloom rapeseed plants, used to make canola oil.
Lavender season is late June to the beginning of August.
Rapeseed season is from usually the middle of May through June.
PROTIPS:
- Wear good shoes to hike to the church. I wore flats and ended up having to go barefoot because the stone is so smooth from being worn down over hundreds of years.
- Do the opposite of what we did. Go up the cobblestone trail, which starts where the road ends and the city begins. Go right when you leave the church and take the gravel path down.
- Part of the road in the Gorge du Verdon is one way! Make sure to plan your route in advance!
